As I embark on my journey as a contractor, I continue to learn valuable lessons. I started my business in January 2023, and every step has been a learning experience. One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned? Always read the entire RFP (Request for Proposal).

The Mistake That Cost Me an Opportunity

Early on, I made a mistake that I’ll never forget I skim-read an RFP. Big mistake. Because of that, I missed out on an opportunity before I even had a chance to compete. That regret stuck with me, and I made sure never to repeat it.

Why Reading the RFP Matters

You can’t afford to play games when it comes to following directions in a proposal. RFPs contain precise instructions, and if you don’t follow them, your submission can be automatically disqualified. Take your time.

When reading an RFP, pay special attention to the Statement of Work (SOW). This section outlines exactly what the contracting agency expects, so it’s crucial that you understand and address every requirement.

Tips for Reviewing an RFP

1. Read Line by Line – Don’t skim. Every word in an RFP is there for a reason.

2. Take Your Time – Give yourself a few days to digest the information. Trying to rush through it in one or two days (like I did) can lead to costly mistakes.

3. Highlight Key Requirements – Identify deadlines, submission formats, and mandatory qualifications.

4. Understand the Scope – Make sure you fully grasp what the agency needs before deciding to bid.

5. Plan Your Approach – Once you’ve read and analyzed the RFP, outline your strategy. Will you be the prime contractor or a subcontractor? Who do you need on your team?

Final Thoughts

Reading an RFP thoroughly is not just about compliance it’s about setting yourself up for success. Missing a small detail can mean losing out on a contract, but taking the time to carefully review every section gives you a competitive edge.
